Trump Warns Putin With Tariff Threat, But Leaves Door Open
Former President Donald Trump is once again making headlines, this time for a bold Tariff Threat aimed at Russia and for saying he’s still open to talking with Vladimir Putin.
In a new interview with the BBC, Trump didn’t hold back. He admitted he’s disappointed in Putin over the war in Ukraine, but said clearly, “I’m not done with him.”
Trump shared that on multiple occasions, he thought a peace deal with Russia was close.
But every time he felt progress was being made, something dramatic would happen.
“We’ll have a great conversation. I’ll think we’re close to getting it done,” he said, “and then he’ll knock down a building in Kyiv.”
So, while Trump isn’t thrilled with Putin’s actions, he’s not giving up just yet.
What the Tariff Threat Means for Russia (and Its Friends)
On Monday, after a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump announced something big:
if Russia doesn’t agree to end its war in Ukraine within 50 days, the U.S. will hit them with 100% “secondary” tariffs.
Now, that’s not just targeting Russia directly. These secondary tariffs would likely go after countries that continue doing business with Russia think China, India, and others.
In other words, Trump wants to pressure Russia’s trading partners in order to pressure Russia.
As he put it: “We are very dissatisfied with them, so we will be implementing really tough tariffs.”
Still, he did not go into details on how these tariffs would be administered.
Regardless, the communication was crystal clear: ceasefire or face extremely severe consequences.
Russia’s Response? They’re Not Impressed
Russia didn’t stay quiet for long. A reply was posted on X (previously Twitter) by Dmitry Medvedev, the former president and current deputy head of the Russian Security Council.
He didn’t mince words, mocking Trump’s Tariff Threat as nothing more than political theater.
“Trump issued a theatrical ultimatum to the Kremlin. The world shuddered, expecting the consequences.
Belligerent Europe was disappointed. Russia didn’t care,” Medvedev wrote.
Basically, Russia’s saying they’re not taking the threat seriously. At least, not yet.
Is This Just Talk Or Something More?
So, is it all just more political noise, or is the real weight behind the tariff danger? it’s hard to say.
Trump did not make a clear plan for the tariff. He mentioned something on the lines of “we are working on this,”
but did not dive into the nuances of how he is planning to convince Putin to prevent violence.
Trump seems to be employing both communication and pressure.
He mentioned that other diplomatic channels are available and that a future meeting with Putin is still a possibility.
What Would Take Place Next?
If Trump carries out his tariff threat, trade might be affected globally.
Countries like China and India may be greatly influenced to reconsider their economic ties with Russia as a result of secondary tariffs.
But it could also lead to diplomatic backlash.
Meanwhile, if this is just Trump turning up the heat before another attempt at negotiations, we might see talks restart in the near future.
Either way, the next 50 days will be telling.
